A Notary Public is an official of integrity appointed by state government – typically by the Secretary of State – to serve the public as an impartial witness in performing a variety of official fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important official or unofficial documents.
A Notary Public is NOT an attorney, judge or high-ranking official and as such cannot perform any acts of unauthorized practice of law which includes: providing legal advice, recommending the type of document needed for a transaction, recommending the type of notarization needed, prepare or draft documents, nor give instruction on how a document should be completed.
